About Sigiriya Rock Fortress

S igiriya, often called the 'Lion Rock,' is an ancient rock fortress rising nearly 200 meters above the jungle in central Sri Lanka. Atop this granite monolith lie the ruins of a 5th-century royal palace built by King Kashyapa, complete with sophisticated water gardens and fresco-covered walls. Halfway up, visitors pass through a monumental gateway in the form of a lion's paws - giving Sigiriya its name. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and is one of the country's most iconic historical landmarks.
